Mars Orbit

The natural meeting place for the crews and passengers of the various ships congregating in differing orbits of the red planet was the largest vessel. That was, easily, the carrier Indomitable, the technical flagship of the Ninth Fleet even though half of those ships were temporarily attached elsewhere.

Brandt, having had twelve hours straight sleep, limped a little faster out of the airlock and down the long series of gangways. Beale was beside her, having relieved Zero of the second in command duties pressed on him by Brandt. Zero didn’t seem to mind, as the arrival of three other elite-trained troops made him feel more at home.

That wasn’t to say that the CP elements under her command were keeping apart from regular troops, in fact they had welcomed her NCOs, who had kept their temporary promotions as the bureaucratic systems of the UN had missed demoting them in the rush of everything happening back on Earth. Kekoa’s admission to the group was automatic, given that all of them wanted to know just what the hell he’d been thinking when he had rushed a mech, albeit an old model, and tackled the damn thing to the ground to rip the pilot out of the cockpit like a savage. Kekoa shrugged it off, even after they reminded him that an old mech fired new bullets, and mumbled his embarrassment away, saying that he wouldn’t be able to look at himself in the mirror ever again if they had shot down his commanding officer.

Brandt, hearing that second-hand, blushed with a mixture of emotions she couldn’t quite pin down.

“’ttention on deck!” barked a master petty officer as they walked into the large briefing room specifically built near to the carrier’s bridge. Brandt stopped and returned the salutes of the officers and NCOs facing her in the doorway until a loud voice from behind her made her embarrassed to have mistaken the call for attention to be for her.

“At ease,” Dassiova called out over the top of her head as he walked around her and patted a quick but sympathetic hand on her shoulder. “No time for that, let’s get to it.”

Brandt made a beeline for the nearest chair with Beale beside her. She was confused, thinking that the assembly of senior officers from other ships and the fleet’s carrier flagship were gathered together for what had happened to her and her team. As she tried to piece together the few bits of the jigsaw puzzle she had, a smiling face sat opposite her as it stayed glued to her own. The face resolved into that of the youthfully good-looking and confident Kyle Torres, wearing the same rank insignia as her own but with a captain’s star over the name of the ship stenciled on his jump suit. She couldn’t make out the name of the ship, but she did recognize the face.

“Take a seat, shut up, don’t ask when chow-time is, the head is out in the corridor and if you haven’t been yet, then that’s just tough.
